We Have Answers To Your Questions About the Federal Tax Credit

Wednesday, October 6th, 2010

Time is running out to receive the federal tax credit on qualifying home improvements. If you have been trying to decide whether to install replacement windows, now is the perfect time to do it. Maybe you have some questions about the tax credit or don’t quite understand the process. Here are some answers to some frequently asked questions about the federal tax credit:

Do all Energy Star windows and doors on the market qualify for the tax credit?
No, just because the label says energy star does not mean that it automatically qualifies. Read your label carefully and talk to your home improvement contractor. Exterior windows and doors must have a U-Factor of less than or equal to 0.30 to qualify. Other criteria apply.

If I claimed a tax credit in 2009, can I also claim the $1,500 in tax credits again in 2010?
No.  You are only eligible for a total of $1,500 in tax credits for improvements. If you did not use all of the credit in 2009 you can use the remainder of the credit in 2010 for a total value of $1500 for tax credits combining the two years.

Does the tax credit include the total cost of the windows and the installation?
No, the tax credit applies to the cost of all the products, qualifying windows and doors, but does not include the cost of installation.

Winterizing Your Home – Part 1

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

Today is the first day of fall. The days are shorter, the weather is cooler, and the leaves will soon be falling. This is a great time to start winterizing your home. Take the time one weekend to go through the following areas of your home to check for items that need to be repaired or possibly even replaced.

Winterize Your Windows:
Inspect your windows for gaps. The smallest gaps will allow cold air in during the winter. You still have time to install replacement windows before the cold sets in. You will see improved energy efficiency and you can still qualify for the federal tax credit this year.

Winterize Your Doors:
Check for gaps at night by having someone outside shine a light around the door while you stand inside. If you see light shining through in any places, you should replace the weather stripping on your door.

Check Exterior Lightbulbs:
Replace all the exterior lightbulbs on your floodlights and porches. Do it now while the weather is still cool. You don’t want to be outside on a ladder in the bitter cold doing that chore.

Take these little steps to prepare your home for winter. More tips to come! Stay tuned for Part 2 of winterizing your home.

Answering Questions About Replacement Windows and the Federal Tax Credit

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Are you considering some home improvements? Replacement windows are one of the improvements that are included in the federal tax credit. Hurry, the federal offer expires on December 31, 2010. Call Regal Home Improvement today and we can answer your questions about replacement windows and how you can qualify for the federal tax credit. Here are some common questions that people are asking:

Do all replacement windows and doors qualify for the tax credit?
No.  Only exterior windows and doors that have a u-factor less than or equal to 0.30 and a solar heat gain coefficient of less than or equal to 0.30 will qualify for the tax credit.

Can you use the entire $1,500 credit toward the cost of having new windows installed?
Yes.  A homeowner may use the entire $1,500 tax credit on windows providing the total cost of the project uses the entire amount. Remember, the credit os 30% of the cost of qualified home improvements, not including installation.

What happens if the 30% of the qualified project is less than $1,500?
The homeowner can combine different qualified projects until they have used the total $1500 allotted credit.
