A Richmond Tradition:
Riding a streetcar downtown, sipping tea at Miller & Rhoads, seeing Santa at Thalhimers – some Richmond traditions have vanished. But a tradition of excellence that began in 1949 continues today at Regal Home Improvement. Accomplishing over a 60-year tradition is no easy feat for any company, and is especially difficult in Regal’s business segments. Any Richmonder can name dozens of businesses that are no longer in existence, and in the home improvement segment, hundreds of companies have come and gone during the past 60 years. Regal has survived the times and become an icon in the Virginia home improvement industry through its family perseverance, employee dedication and commitment to quality products and excellent service.
A Family Affair:
A cold and rainy day in the spring of 1949 sent business acquaintances Harold Arones and Mark Schnieder to the movies. A friendly conversation about their respective jobs led to the formation of Regal Home Improvement. The founding fathers they envisioned a different kind of company, one that would become an industry leader by delivering superior customer service and quality products.
One of the partners’ first steps in accomplishing their lofty business goals was to hire several salesmen, including Israel Allen and his son-in-law Allan Mullian. Working in tandem, the new sales team helped grow the business tremendously, and in 1959 Mullian became Regal’s third partner. Mullian’s innovative ideas and enthusiastic energy propelled the company through the 1970s and 1980s.
The New Regime:
The family affair at Regal continued as Mullian’s son Glenn joined the business in 1977, followed by son Arthur in 1989. After several years of learning the business from the ground up, the sons assumed leadership of Real when their father retired in 1993. The Mullian sons have adopted the original vision of Regal’s founders and have emulated their father’s leadership abilities, but they have also reorganized the company to meet the needs of today’s discerning consumer. Glenn and Arthur have refined the company’s product lines, revamped its quality control systems, instituted new markeing techniques and reorganized its sales training program. Today, Regal is an award winning and nationally ranked industry leader that has withstood the test of time to become Virginia’s oldest and most respected home improvement company.
